Misty LaFree, LLPC, Limited Licensed Professional Counselor

Hello! My name is Misty LaFree, and I am a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor and trauma focused professional who specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults. I enjoy working with people in all walks of life but specialize in young adults navigating through the turmoil of becoming adults. This includes issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, transitional adjustments, trauma, and relationship difficulties.

My goal is to create a safe space where you can bring your entire, authentic self to the table and leave feeling encouraged, seen, and heard. I believe that healing is not linear and that it takes time. It is a privilege and a blessing  to witness people changing their narratives and reclaiming their stories.

Counseling Approach:

I believe wholeheartedly that the most important part of counseling in the counseling relationship. My commitment to counseling is the same that I have for my clients – I will come with open hands and an open heart, addressing friction, and encouraging my clients through life’s hardships. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to provide access to skills which address anxiety, depression, and general life transitions. I am certified in EMDR and soon will be certified in Trauma-Focused CBT to help individuals navigate through complex trauma within their narrative. In session you will likely be equipped with various tools from solution focused therapy, family systems theory, strengths-based therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness. I believe that therapy is different for each individual and I will do my best to navigate finding out what works for you with you so that you feel empowered throughout the counseling experience.

Education and Experience:

I completed my Masters of Clinical Mental Health at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (Cornerstone University) in 2021. I began my counseling journey in non-profit work prior to making the switch to private practice. While in my graduate program, I interned at Bethany Christian Services in their refugee program to help individuals cope with the trauma associated with fleeing their homes. I also interned at Adolescent and Family Behavioral Health services where I helped implement dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) for teens and young adults struggling with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

I also serve in family ministry throughout my church, beginning with infants all the way through women’s ministry. It is such a blessing to walk with families through all stages of growth  and development and see them navigate hardships and discover resiliency together.

In my free time you can find me enjoying nature on a hike or with my nose firmly planted in a book. I have two cats, Gatsby and Tigger who are just too cute. I will also likely have a coffee mug/cup at hand or near me at all times. I cannot wait to come alongside you, encourage you, and challenge you as you walk through the journey of life. It will be a joy to see you grow and blossom into the person that you were created to be.
