Mike Wiersma, LPC, Licensed Professional Counselor
Hi, I’m Mike Wiersma, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Life Coach. I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families. I believe no matter what situation anyone is going through, coming out of, or heading toward, no one has to do it alone. Everyone needs a source of consistent stability and hope in their life; counseling should be a place where anyone can get that necessary stability and hope, in any situation. In my years of providing counseling services, one of the biggest struggles I have seen in individuals is losing hope for themselves and/or what they are going through. I believe there is a way forward for every person and every situation; I look forward to being a part of your journey to discovering that path.
COUNSELING APPROACH
I welcome the opportunity to work with adults, couples, adolescents, and young children struggling with a variety of concerns, which may include: anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, relationship strain, grief and loss, as well as, issues of identity.
I typically use a solution-focused approach to counseling, combined with a mix of other counseling techniques best suited to the individual, couple, or family. I do my best to give practical, purposeful steps at every session in order to heal, grow through, or cope with large and complex life situations.
I specialize in the areas of trauma, anxiety, and identity. I have had the privilege to walk with people through many unique and difficult situations. Many times, these are situations that feel hopeless and completely out of control. I am here to help my clients regain hope and a sense of peace and calm so that they can feel like themselves again.
I believe the counseling process should be one of the most valuable experiences an individual can have. Focused and individualized care about a specific situation, in addition to a safe space to process and heal, are necessary for individuals to navigate the difficult parts of their life as well.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
I earned my Master's Degree in Counseling from Cornerstone University. I began my career at Boy Scouts of America serving as the Urban Outreach Director for West Michigan. After serving a variety of roles at the Boy Scouts of America for nearly 5 years, I transitioned into counseling and community care full-time.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I like being active and having a daily fitness regimen. I feel like exercise and moving our bodies is a small thing all of us can do to improve our mental and emotional health. I mountain bike, golf, and play tennis on a regular basis. I also enjoy playing recreational team sports, including softball, basketball, and flag football.
